Hasta Singapur lanzamos nuestra mira telescópica para localizar la ciudad de Yishun. En este enclave asiático, poco conocido por su relación con el metal, nos encontramos con un peculiar y emprendedor guitarrista y compositor: Ron Ravi Warrion. Seguidor confeso del gran Mark Reale (guitarrista de Riot fallecido en 2012) y devoto del metal americano más clásico, Ron Ravi ha salvado de forma admirable la distancia y los obstáculos trazando un puente imaginario hasta Estados Unidos para formar su propia banda, Warrion, en la que destaca la presencia del archiconocido vocalista Michael Vescera (Obsession, Loudness, Yngwie Malmsteen….)
Awakening The Hydra es el sobresaliente debut de Warrion, un conjunto completamente formado por músicos americanos con la excepción del mencionado Ron Ravi, oriundo de Singapur. Heavy metal clásico, del de toda la vida, corre por las venas de esta banda que surge de la mano de Pure Steel Records. La mítica voz de Vescera, la colaboración del cantante George Call (Aska) y las poderosas guitarras que confluyen en este disco, lo convierten en un imprescindible en 2013 para los amantes del género.

¿Qué influencias hicieron que te convirtieras en músico y comenzaras a tocar la guitarra? ¿Cómo surgió la banda Warrion?
Empecé con bandas como Dio, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Riot y Virgin Steele durante mi etapa escolar. Fue precisamente entonces cuando cogí la guitarra, y una cosa llevó a la otra. Y en referencia a Warrion, yo quería trabajar con gente de bandas que me gustaban, entre las que destacan Halloween, New Eden, Aska y Obsession. Quería que ellos propulsaran e hicieran más bellas mis ideas con su toque mágico.
¿Warrion es una banda o un proyecto?
Warrion es un proyecto-banda. Le pregunté a Rob (Halloween) a ver si era tan amable de encargarse de las baterías y me dijo que sí. Localicé a Tim Thomas y nos entendimos a la perfección. Es un gran guitarrista y todo un profesional. Entonces me puse en contacto con los chicos de Aska; Keith y George. Estuve hablando por teléfono con este último y en diez días ya había hecho un trabajo sobresaliente en Victim Of Religion y Serpents Fire. Michael Vescera y yo tuvimos una conversación telefónica de cuatro horas e inmediatamente me di cuenta de que era el cantante ideal para Warrion.
¿Por qué pensaste en Michael Vescera como vocalista?
Escuché a Vescera por primera vez cuando tenía 12 años. Es un gran cantante, tenía casi todos los CD’s de las bandas en las que ha militado. Conseguir el vocalista adecuado para Warrion fue una tarea muy dura desde el comienzo. Había hablado con varios cantantes y la mayoría no me impresionaron como sí lo hizo Michael. Dos semanas después de la conversación telefónica me envió la canción Savage y me quedé anonadado.
Vescera es conocido por pertenecer a grandes bandas como Obsession, Loudness, Yngwie Malmsteen… ¿Cuáles son tus discos preferidos de los que ha grabado?
Carnival Of Lies de Obsession, Soldier Of Fortune de Loudness y The Seventh Sign de Yngwie Malmsteen.
¿Llegasteis a grabar Awakening The Hydra en el mismo estudio?
No, yo grabé todas mis partes de guitarra en un estudio local mientras que Keith registró el bajo en Keith Recording. Tim lo hizo en su propio estudio y Michael en Toy Room. Todos en Warrion tienen sus propias instalaciones de grabación, salvo yo.
¿Podrías presentar a los otros miembros de la banda; el guitarrista Tim Thomas (Abattoir, ex Agent Steel, ex Steel Prophet), el bajista Keith Knight (Aska), George Call (vocalista en dos temas) y el batería Rob Brug (Halloween)?
Keith Knight y George Call son los dos de la banda Aska. Warrion compartimos el mismo sello discográfico; Pure Steel Records, y la misma fecha de salida de nuestros discos. Aska es heavy metal de los ochenta de alto calibre, los cuales recomiendo fervientemente. Rob está de nuevo en Hallowen y justo acababan de volver de una gira por Alemania este año. Tim Thomas editará su CD en solitario muy pronto con V.K. Lynne a la voz.
¿Cómo podrías definir Awakening The Hydra? ¿Para qué tipo de fans está destinado?
Para fans del heavy metal de los ochenta que les gusten bandas como Leatherwolf, Fifth Angel, Riot, Aska, Iron Maiden, Obsession, Crimson Glory, Judas Priest, Manowar, etc.
¿Qué concepto lírico encierra Awakening The Hydra?
Awakening The Hydra es un álbum conceptual basado en una aventura espiritual de un individuo que acostumbra a realizar viajes astrales. Cada una de las canciones expresa sus pensamientos, visiones y progreso. A mitad de su camino se cuestiona la religión, si es real o un producto del hombre. Sus transiciones astrales continúan hasta un punto en el que es incapaz de discernir si está en el ámbito real o en el astral. Llega a un grado en el que se empieza a preguntar si su mente le está gastando bromas. Yo me encargué de escribir tanto las letras como las melodías de voz.
¿Consideras que la música de Warrion tendrá más seguidores en Europa que en América?
Por mi propia perspectiva a través de los años creo que triunfará más en Europa. Pero también hay legiones de seguidores de metal en América. Rojo, blanco y azul para mí y para vosotros: ¡Metal americano!
¿Contaréis con Michael Vescera si salís a tocar en directo?
Definitivamente sí.
¿Qué planes tenéis en mente a corto plazo?
Esperamos hacer algunos vídeos promocionales y también realizar conciertos a comienzos de 2014.
¿Cuáles son tus bandas y guitarristas preferidos? ¿Qué música escuchas en tu tiempo libre?
Dio, Black Sabbath, Riot, Virgin Steele y la mayoría de bandas de comienzos de los años ochenta. En cuanto a guitarristas me quedo con Mark Reale de Riot. Además de heavy, también escucho grupos tipo Bonfire, Journey (Steve Perry), Survivor, Signal, Alien, Treat, FM y la mayoría de bandas de AOR.
¿Hay escena de heavy metal en Singapur?
No, pero hay un montón de bandas extremas que tocan grind core, death, black metal…

WARRION INTERVIEW
First of all, Ron, update us a bit on your personal profile. Your procedence, how did you start playing guitar, influences and how did you decide to arrange the band Warrion?
I chanced upon Dio, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Riot and Virgin Steele during my school days and around that period of time I picked up the guitar and one thing led to another. As for Warrion, I wanted to work with bands that I enjoyed listening to and I was impressed with Halloween, New Eden, Aska and Obsession. I wanted them to inject and beautify my ideas with their magical touch!!
Could we consider Warrion like a band or just a project? How did Warrion come to life?
Warrion is a project band!! I asked Rob (Halloween) if he would be keen on laying the drums and he said yes, I contacted Tim Thomas and we both got along very well, he is a great guitarist and he’s very professional! I then asked both the Aska guys Keith and George as well. I called up George and we spoke on the phone and ten days later George does an amazing job on Victim Of Religion and Serpents Fire. Michael Vescera and I had a four hour phone conversation and I immediately knew he was the singer for Warrion.
Why did you select Michael Vescera as the singer?
I first heard Michael Vescera when I was 12. He is a great singer, I owned almost all the CDs of bands he was involved in. Getting the right singer for Warrion was a very difficult task right from the start, I had spoken to a few singers and most of them did not impress me as much as Michael. After my phone conversation with Michael, he sent me the song Savage two weeks later and I was completely blown away.
Michael Vescera is a really well known vocalist after being part of bands such as Obsession, Loudness, Yngwie Malmsteen… What are your favourite albums recorded by Michael Vescera?
Obsession Carnival Of Lies, Loudness Soldier Of Fortune and Yngwie Malmsteen The Seventh Sign.
Did you record the album together? I mean did you record the music and the vocals in the same studio?
No, I recorded all my guitars in a local studio, Keith layed his bass tracks in Knight Recording, Tim in his own studio and Michael in Toy Room. Everyone in Warrion has their own recording studio, with the exception of myself.
What can you tell us about the other members in the band: guitar player Tim Thomas (Abattoir, ex Agent Steel, ex Steel Prophet), bassist Keith Knight (Aska), guest singer George Call and drummer Rob Brug (Halloween)?
Keith Knight and George Call are both from Aska, we (Warrion) both share the same label (Pure Steel Records) and release date on 27th September. Aska is high calibre 80s heavy metal which I highly recommend!! Rob is currently back in Halloween and they just came back from a German tour this year. Tim Thomas will be releasing his solo CD soon with V.K. Lynne on vocals.
How could you define musically Awakening The Hydra. What kind of fans will enjoy it?
Fans of early 80s heavy metal, Leatherwolf, Fifth Angel, Riot, Aska, Iron Maiden, Obsession, Crimson Glory, Judas Priest, Manowar etc will enjoy it!!
What are the lyrics based on? Who’s arranged the lyrics?
Awakening The Hydra is a concept album based on a spiritual journey of an individual who travels the astral realm. Every song in the album expresses his thoughts, visions and progress. Midway through his journey he questions religion, if it is real or man made. His astral transitions continue to an extend where he is unable even to know if he is in the real world or the astral realm. At one point he even begins to question if his mind is playing tricks on him. I wrote the lyrics and all the vocal melodies.
Do you think Warrion kind of music is likely to be more succesful in Europe than in America?
From what I have observed throughout the years I believe it will be Europe. But there are lots of cool American metal legions as well. Red White and Blue for me and you, American metal!!!!!!!
What is the Warrion live experience? Will you count with Michael Vescera on stage?
This is a question best answered by a fan who would be able to see us perform. Yes Michael Vescera will be the singer if we do tour.
What are the upcoming projects for the band?
We are hoping to do some promo videos and some shows early in 2014.
What are your all time favourite bands and guitar players? What kind of music you listen to in your free time?
Dio, Black Sabbath, Riot, Virgin Steele and most of the early 80s bands. As for guitarist Mark Reale of Riot. Aside from the 80s heavy metal bands I enjoy bands like Bonfire, Journey (Steve Perry), Survivor, Signal, Alien, Treat, FM and most of the Aor bands!!
Is there any heavy metal scene in Singapore?
There is no heavy metal scene, but there is a lot of extreme metal like grind core, death, black metal…
